New Sanctuary leaders Pastor Walter Coleman of Adalberto United Methodist Church, Emma Lozano, Director of Centro Fronteras and Saulito Arellano, son of Elvira Arellano who was recently deported after taking sanctuary for a year in Adalberto Methodist Church and named Person of the Year by time Magazine in 2006 will be in Washington DC on September 12 to call on Congress to initiate legislation for humane treatment of undocumented people and their families. Human and Immigrant Rights groups around the nation will join in solidarity demonstrations on Wednesday, September 12 at immigration offices to demand an end to:

March of the People comes to Cleveland:

"Impeach the President, End the War"

University of Chicago master's student Mario Penalver is treking 830 miles from Chicago to D.C. in what is being called "The March Of The People". He will be in the Cleveland area from July 25-30.

Folks are encouraged to support and join him in this courageous stand for peace and sanity in a world gone wrong. This is also a call for impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

We also plan to take him out to lunch and to see Yoko Ono's "Imagine Peace" show which is at
the Emily Davis Gallery at The University of Akron's Mary Schiller School of Art which is showing from 10a.m.-6p.m.

Report back on Bush Protest in Cleveland

Folks gathered today to Protest Bush's visit to Cleveland.

About 25-30 folks showed up at the Free Stamp this morning to protest Bush's visit to Cleveland. We had the huge Impeach letters along with various banners and signs most of them calling for impeachment. A reporter told us that earlier in the morning in Parma an anti war activist got into a fist fight with a Bush supporter after she called the anti war woman the c word. We managed to get our message out loud and clear on Fox8 at 6p.m. They showed us screaming "Push Bush Out" and the word IMPEACH clearly on several of our banners and signs along with the huge letters. The reporter also said that we were calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

Afterwards three of us went to a freeway overpass for about an hour and 1/2 with a large IMPEACH banner. We recieved tons of honks,thumbs up, peace signs flashing lights and raised fists from the cars passing below. We only got two negative responses.

From the overwhelming positve response we have decided that we are going to do freeway blogging at least once a week from now on throughout the summer and beyond. We also plan to hit the festivals and musical events with the orange bandanas and get the color orange out everywhere we can over the summer, since orange is the color of the impeachment movement.

According to the Plain Dealer, "President Bush wants to spend some time in a 'great American city,' so he will put in the better part of a workday Tuesday in Cleveland, the White House said.
He will talk with people in the business of energy technology and health care. Then he will make remarks to business people about energy and health care, talk about fiscal discipline -- with an implicit if not explicit veto threat -- and the war on terror."

Bush will visit two places in Cleveland, GrafTech International in Parma (a maker of fuel cell components) and the Cleveland Clinic.

In Cleveland A28 went well, the weather started out nasty, cold and wet earlier in the day.

At 1 p.m. we connected with local environmentalists from Ohio Citizen Action who were doing a bike ride fundraiser for their local clean air campaign. We showed parts of 'Voices For Impeachment" at Visible Voices Books and a news clip about O.C.A's clean air campaign. They brought their folks to the film showing and we joined forces. It was good because we also were helping out this new progressive bookstore by bringing folks in. Everyone cooperated with each other and many people from different peace and justice groups and political perspectives (as well as individuals) participated throughout the day..

After that we several of us went with some SDS youths to the local recruiting station and held up an impeachment banner and did some street theatre with a "detainee".. We shut the recruiting station down and plastered the windows with "Impeach Bush and Cheney for War Crimes" and "Not Our President" signs and copies of the WCW call before we left.

Much to our delight the weather cleared up with blue skies and warmer temperatures as we were going back to Lincoln Park . We decorated it with orange Impeach balloons to the delight of all the children in the playground who were running around with them. About 100 people trickled in and we held up large letters , banners and signs along the main drag and did some strong agitation and open mic to an audience that formed across the street by a local church. We recieved many honks and thumbs up. I also recited the Pledge Of Resistance.

Some of us formed the word impeach in the grass (on top of plastic) while others kept the vigil at the street going.A group of us then marched to Pat's In the Flats with 911Truth folks and did some strong agitation outside of local yuppie restaurants ...some folks and shop keepers came out and clapped while a few others yelled at us but we held our positions and had really good agitation going on the whole time. We also had a "detainee" in jumpsuit with us doing stress positions which always gets attention.

At Pat's In The Flats we tabled, danced and listened to Anti -Bush bands until the wee hours of the morning.We also did some impeach petitions and made new contacts.
It was a successful day and we met many new faces and activists..

Folks really liked the idea of being part of a national movement happening all over. Some folks suggested we all join forces and do impeachment actions like this every week!

NEW YORK, N.Y., April 23, 2007 - In response to today’s announcement by Rep. Dennis Kucinich that he plans to file Articles of Impeachment against Vice-President Dick Cheney, Americans across the country will take to the streets on April 28 to express their support for the impeachment of both Cheney and Bush. From Miami, Florida to North Pole, Alaska, more than 100 actions are planned nationwide, with more being added by the hour.

Jacob Park, National Coordinator of the April 28 actions, said "George Bush and Dick Cheney lied the nation into an illegal war of aggression, are spying on millions of innocent Americans, and have authorized the use of torture. The time has come for all of us—particularly our representatives in Congress—to decide where we stand. Impeachment is a self-evident moral imperative and to turn a blind eye to lying, spying, and torture makes a mockery of our most basic values and the very notion of democracy."

On April 28, a scheduled visit by George Bush to Miami will be greeted by a massive impeachment rally called for by dozens of organizations. At the California Democratic Convention in San Diego, hundreds of delegates will openly defy the party leadership by bringing an impeachment resolution to the floor for a vote. Thousands of people will form “human murals” spelling the word “impeach” with their bodies at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, Coney Island in New York, the foot of the Washington monument, and other locations. And elsewhere people will spell out the word in myriad creative ways ranging from banners on freeway overpasses to a skywriting plane over the New Orleans Jazzfest to candles in Atlanta.

The Vigil will take place at the Soldiers and Sailor's Monument on Public Square
Vigil BEGINS at 5:00 a.m. on March 8th and ENDS at 9:00 p.m. on March 15th.
Each second of the vigil will commemorate the life of 1 person lost to the Iraq war.

Join the Northeast Ohio Anti-War Coalition (NOAC) and the other are peace and justice groups as we commemorate all those who have died in the illegal, immoral war and occupation of Iraq.

NOAC will begin setting up the vigil site at 5:00 a.m. on March 8th.

We invite everyone to join us at 7:00 a.m. for meditation and a drum circle to the sun at sunrise to officially open the vigil.

On February 20, at 4:30 pm, local peace and student groups will gather at the officeof Senator George Voinovich in Nelsonville, Ohio. Members of the Mid-Ohio Valley Peace Initiative, People for Peace and Justice, Codepink, Students for a Democratic Society, and Interact will visit Voinovich's office to deliver petitions and demand a signed pledge from the Senator stating thathe will vote against the upcoming supplemental funding bill for the Iraq war.

Constituents of Senator Voinovich and supporters of this pledge will gather outside the office to send a peaceful, nonviolent, but strong message to the Senator: The war must end and the best way to make this happen is to stop paying for it. During February and March, similar events are taking place across the country aspart of the Occupation Project.

This project is organized by Chicago-based Voices for Creative Nonviolence, and is co-sponsored by CODEPINK and Veterans for Peace,along with many other national organizations working for peace. Actions from Alaskato D.C. have already resulted in arrests as citizens sit down in the offices oftheir Senators and Representatives. The World Can't Wait is launching a speaking tour to campuses and military bases across the country. We are leaving immediately. This is an emergency. We are counting on everyone who knows that the arrogant escalation of the Bush war is a turning point-- and how we respond will impact the whole world, one way or another, for years to come.

When Nixon said he’d end the war by escalating it to Cambodia in May 1970, campuses across the nation were shut down in the largest student strike in the history of this country. This is something the purveyors of war for empire fear...

In the wake of Bush's recent speech, the campuses are appallingly quiet. But it is an intense calm. This tour aims to lift the lid by bringing the truth, including an eyewitness report on the debacle in Iraq from recently returned Marine, Liam Madden.

"Mission of a Generation" will also take its daring message to military bases around the country. It's an open secret that there are countless soldiers who want to connect with GI's who are refusing to be mercenaries for empire and are saying no …

Hook up with World Can't Wait beginning at 9am Saturday, Jan. 27, at 4th Street and Madison Drive, at the edge of the Mall, across from the National Gallery of Art east building (click here for a map). This is a 5-block walk down the hill from Union Station (Red Line Metro Stop) and about the same distance from the Smithsonian Metro stop (Orange and Blue Line).

George Bush has a dramatic and risky plan to escalate and expand the war, not all of which he’s revealed. As he was speaking last Wednesday, US forces went into Kurdish territory, broke into an Iranian diplomatic building, and seized files and people, in violation of the sovereignty of both Iran and the Kurdish region – a clear provocation. Now, 3 aircraft carriers are in the Persian Gulf. As someone said at the World Cant’ Wait national meeting this past weekend, “this is the start of another war, not just the expansion of this one.”

There is no way a president who has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity should be in office. Now he’s pledged to commit more and worse – he is moving towards war with Iran. A president who has no popularity and little legitimacy should have none.

Report Back: End the War NOW /
No Torture Actions

On a windy cold day on Jan.11 in Cleveland , Ohio we had 3 actions against Gitmo and the continued war and Bush's announced troop escalation plan in Iraq..

In the early hours of morning rush hour a group of us posted ourselves with banners outside of the Federal Courthouse where the deportation hearings are rountinely held. We recieved many honks from the morning commuters.

At 2 p.m. we hit the recruitng station and recieved many honks for peace there as well. Several people debated with us there including a soldier in uniform. Some came across the street and joined us. We also handed out flyers of the call .

Later about 30 folks showed up at Public Square to do street theatre and roll the Gitmo cage thru downtown Cleveland. Catholic workers dressed as detainees and military police and looked very authentic. It was evening rush hour so a lot of people saw us as we chanted loudly thruout. finally ending up at the Federal Building where we had open mic. Some folks joined us.
We recieved many stares and honks for peace thruout all of our actions. The blown up pictures of torture victims also recieved much attention from passerbys.

This was a good day because folks from the Catholic Workers, Cleveland Non Violence Network, Not In Our Name , NOAC , WCW and a few new faces all joined together to say no to Guantanamo and the continued escalation and occupation of Iraq.

I would have liked to see many more show up but for Cleveland and with the cold weather and last minute call to action most felt it was succesful and a good day of action. However the press did not show up.

I finished off the day by reciting the Pledge of Resistance . Despite the intense cold and unforgiving wind that treated our signs and banners like sails folks hung in there with high spirits and loud voices until the end.

PROTEST THIS THURSDAY: NO MORE TROOPS IN IRAQ, NO MORE TORTURE!

This Thursday, Jan 11, there will be protests nationwide regarding 2 of the most damning and impeachable offenses of the Bush Regime: the war on Iraq and torture.

Bush plans to announce an increase in troops on Wednesday, his "surge" strategy in Iraq. Protests are being called by many groups across the country the Day After the announcment, including World Can't Wait and True Majority. When Bush announces "more", we say NO!

Thursday also marks the 5th Year of US imprisonment and torture. Groups around the country will also be protesting to Shut Down Guantanamo.

International Human Rights Day activities
SILENCE + TORTURE = COMPLICITY

On December 10th and 11th, in honor of International Human Rights Day, take a stand against the legalization of torture. Spend the whole day wearing what Guantanamo detainees have to wear everyday. Dress in the orange jumpsuit, hood, shackles, etc. Wear it to school. Wear it to work. Wear it to church or religious services. Detainees at Guantanamo Bay are shackled, held in cages, dressed in orange jumpsuits and sometimes kept hooded, and subjected to torture. In September, Congress made all this legal with the Military Commissions Act (MCA). And in the wake of election promises to bring about a "new direction", no one in Congress is even talking about repealing the MCA and stopping torture.

Sunday, December 10th: Human Rights and Impeachment Day
Join with World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime in a film showing, part of impeachment town hall meetings on Dec. 10th across the country. We will be showing a film by the Center for Constitutional Rights, "How to Impeach a President." And join the discussion about what it will take to drive this regime from power.

We must not lose an ounce of momentum. We are continuing to educate people about and organize protest to the Torture Law. At this meeting, we will talk more about the Torture Bill and how to oppose it. Plans so far:

1) Being out in the streets - be out in the public square. Wear orange. Wear orange armbands. Decorate yourself and the city with orange Emergency crime tape to symbolize those being disappeared and tortured in our name. Pick a busy area in your city and be there at the same time and day for the next 6 weeks, creating a culture of resistance in song and theater, holding speak-outs on the “Your Government” indictments, making exhibits and showing films. We’ll be ready to respond to an October, or November surprise by the Bush Regime.
2) TEACH-IN to can carry out emergency education on each of the “Your Government” indictments found in our Call. We are out to wake people up to what is going on, in their name. We will make the case that this regime is guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Clevelanders say NO to Torture: Oct 17

Yesterday, about 16 people protested at noon in front of the Federal Building in downtown Cleveland, just a few hours after Bush signed into law of the Military Commissions Act of 2006.

Almost everyone wore orange. A couple people wore the orange jumpsuits that detainees wear in Guantanamo. The bullhorn was passed from hand to hand, with different people speaking about what the torture law is about, and expressing their outrage.

We then marched to the office of Ohio Senator Mike DeWine, who voted for the torture bill. Along the way, we handed out WCW fliers and got lots of honks from the downtown traffic.

Bush will be signing the Military Commissions Act into law Tuesday, 10/17/06, at 9:35am. Signing torture into law and gutting habeus corpus cannot be allowed to stand without outpourings of resistance. Silence is complicity. On Tuesday, wear orange and organize everyone you know to wear orange, and hold emergency public protests.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act, Congress has effectively ratified torture and indefinite detentions, stripping away the right to habeus corpus. This is indeed a further leap on the road towards fascism: what has existed in the shadowy world of clandestine action now has the authority of law.

That which you will not resist and mobilize to stop, you will learn - or be forced - to accept.

If we do not want to be a nation of torturers, there must immediately be visual displays of opposition to the Military Commissions Act and the torture and indefinite detentions.

Our Next Steps:

1. We will be holding national teach-ins on all the 7 "your government" indictments in our Call . We plan on having authoritative voices speak on torture, war, theocracy, attacks on women's rights, bigotry, attacks on science, detentions. If you want to be part of this, contact us asap. These teach-ins will take place between October 26 and October 30. Time and place in Cleveland to be announced soon.

2. World Can't Wait made the most significant national protest of the torture bill ("Military Commissions Act of 2006) with the full page ad we ran in the New York Times on Oct 4. We need to represent to the world that "we are not a nation of torturers!" And we'll make that visible by wearing ORANGE. Abd we'll be getting out on the streets on a regular basis.

In Cleveland, we'll be making orange t-shirts, big posters of torture victims to hold on street corners, street theatre, doing banner drops, billboards (this costs a lot, but gets the word out and could draw media attention).

JOIN US THIS WEEKEND TO START GETTING ORANGE ALL OVER NORTHEAST OHIO!
On Saturday, Oct 14, we'll be tabling at John Carroll University at the Counter Recruitment Conference 10 am- 2 pm, in the University Center. And we'll be at the Amy Goodman event that nite at 7 pm at JCU. We'll have orange t-shirts, ribbons, etc.

Do it yourself: EVERYONE can put on orange ribbons or cut pieces of crepe paper (very cheap!) and write NO TORTURE, and pin them on your shirt or jacket. Make a bunch of these and get them out on your campus, workplace, place of worship, on the bus, wherever.

And on Halloween! have as many people as possible, put out the word, for folks to dress as torture victims or Guantanamo detainees on Halloween

Actions to Drive Out the Bush Regime occurred from coast to coast on October 5 in over 200 locations. Several thousand took to the streets in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, hundreds acted in cities such as Tucson, Portland, Atlanta, and Austin, and in many small towns and cities scores of people went to intersections, town centers, local beaches, and wherever they thought they would reach the most people in their areas with the message that This Regime Does Not Represent Us and We Will Drive it Out.

Across the country, people young and old showed the heart and courage to confront the reality of the fascistic and war mongering direction the Bush Regime has been driving this country and the entire world. Together, we made a powerful and precious political statement - one that is being debated and seriously considered but that must still be acted on by people in a more massive way to actually shift the political dynamics in this country. The thousands who acted are the nucleus of a spreading movement that must now go on and win the argument with those who still are on the sidelines. Where Bush's whole agenda is repudiated and he and his Regime must leave office in disgrace.

Cleveland report
In Cleveland, close to 400 people gathered throughout the day at Willard Park across from the Federal Building. Despite the howling wind, therewas a spirit of commitment, determination and passion to drive out theBush regime. There were scores of youth from over a dozen high schools and colleges in the area and some from as far as 60 miles away. Several high school youth took off from the rally sight and got flyers out to people coming out of the rapid station, calling on them to Join Us.

There were also many retired people, medical workers, blue collar and union folks, teachers, and anti-war/social justice activists, former and current servicemen. At least a couple of dozen office worker types came out during the lunch hour to offer support. People came from: Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin Wallace College, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, LakelandCommunity College, Ohio University, Allegheny College, and Western Kentucky University. Youth from area high schools included Brush, Brookside, Shaker, Cleveland Heights, Willoughby South, Bay Village.

People came from many areas: Lakewood, Lyndhurst, North Olmsted, Canton, Akron, Milan, Sheffield Lake, Cuyahoga Falls, Elyria, Kent, and more.

For many people, it was their first protest.

There were speakers, music, poetry and huge banners and signs in the parkand along a major intersection for hundreds to see and some to stop andjoin the event. One speaker, from the immigrant support network, wore an orange jumpsuit to symbolize the torture and detentions being done "in ournames." The poets were very powerful, giving a heart, urgency and lots of content to the day. There was an open mic, where people of all ages,nationalities and viewpoints, spoke to why this regime must be driven out.

For example:A high school student gave a very poignant and powerful short speechsaying he did not want his daughter (15 years from now) asking him why is torture legal or his sone asking why he has to go to fight in iran. How bush is always invoking the bible, he asked how much longer till gays arebeing murdered and black people are slaves again, because that is in thebible too.

A 6th grader said: I came here because it’s my responsibility as an American to drive out this so-called president. He’s not a president, he is a dictator, and I am tired of it. I am tired of the lies, I’m tired ofthe regime, I’m tired of the oppression, and I want it gone.

Then at 4pm a few hundred poured into the street for the march, chanting“Join us, join us, The World Cant Wait, Drive Out the Bush Regime” and“Torture, Spies Bring it to a Halt.” There were lots of signs and banners, including signs carried by activists against police brutalitysaying “Homeland Security=More Stolen Lives”. A car full of Black women joined the end of the march and followed the whole way, behind a woman on a motorcycle.

There was high energy, loud chanting, pulling banners through lots of wind and then getting in front of Federal Building, where yellow crime tape was pulled in front of the building. The crowd yelled and chanted and then laid down in the street for a die in.

Columbus:
The day started at 10am with a media conference at the Franklin County Board of Elections. Speakers included: Military Familys Speak Out; Fair Trade; Mark S. and Victoria P. local activists; World Can't Wait; Bob Fitrakis-Free Press Editor and Green Party Candidate for Governor. The only press there was one radio program reporter from WOSU radio, and one Indy reporter.

At noon the daylong protest in front of the Statehouse started and business women in business suits joined us on break and lunch hour and held signs. Around 3:30 another dozen or so people joined us who just got off work or school. We marched at 4pm on the sidwalks to the Federal Building where we chanted BUSH STEP DOWN.

At our peak we had at least 100 people. Special props to Antioch College students who came early and stayed all day, to the various students from Ohio State, Wilmington College, and Thomas Worthington High School.

WE NEED TO GO DOWN TO THE WIRE IN ENCOURAGING EVERYONE TO COME OUT TOMORROW!

Tell people at work, call your friends and family, email your lists, pass out fliers, hold signs at high traffic areas, do banner drops over highways, post on blogs and websites, go through the phone book!

A good example from someone in NYC:

I spoke to a woman last night who attended the event at Cooper Union. She had a lot of positive comments about the event, but one line from Debra (national coordinator of World Can't Wait) had a great impact on her.

Debra mentioned the 65 hours left before the day, and this woman got inspired. She left the event at ten pm and headed up to Harlem to hand out flyers. She didn'tget a terrific reception, and after about an hour, hopped on the subway into Park Slope Brooklyn to hand out the rest of her flyers. She put them on posts and in car windshields. Once she ran out, she headed to Coney Island Ave. in Brooklyn andfinished off the evening putting up all of her stickers and posters. She returned home at 5:30 am the next morning.

The whole night spent out and about doing outreach gave her muscles aches and pains, so she could not do any outreach the following day. Still inspired though, she took out her yellow pages and called all of the churches/loca/youth organizations she could find on behalf of World Can't Wait encouraging them to take up and come out Oct. 5th.

Talk about detication huh...Good luck everyone tomorrow---see you in the streets!!!!

*Who wants to get up Oct 5 banners over freeways all over northeast Ohio?
*Who can take stacks of fliers to colleges, high schools, movies, on buses, trains, barbershops, laundromats, and more?
*Who can send out announcements to all their friends and associates in these last days and get them to the protest? Who wants to do phonebanking, to activate all the people we've met in the last few months?
*Who can help wake people up to the sights and sounds of October 5th? Banner drops, giant public art, poster lines along commute lanes, flyering busses and trains, radio news, soundtrucks, building the heart and determination to make this truly a day of mass political resistance.
*Who wants to organize a car caravan from their suburb or town to the rally downtown on the 5th? Get your friends, people from school, workplace, congregation or neighborhood to meet at a pre-determined time andspot, decorate your cars, and be a traveling advertisement.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW THROUGH OCT 5
TO "BRING THIS TO A HALT!"

In 11 days, people in Cleveland will be joining with tens and tens of thousands around the country to "Bring This to a Halt." Many people have newly joined this movement, and are taking part in building for this day of mass resistance against the Bush regime.

Fliers are being distributed by the thousands, hand to hand, stacks left at coffee houses and barber shops, in high schools and galleries, at concerts and on buses; close to 4,000 stickers have already gotten up and out in just a few days. People have heard psa's played on college radio, and our ads have been seen in USA Today and the Free Times. Thousands of dollars have been raised locally to contribute to all this. People are posting Oct 5 announcements on their blogs and websites, and sending announcements to their listserves. Momentum is building towards Oct 5!

We need to keep it up, and expand it geometrically...and you can be part of doing that. Download the fliers and stickers on the website; organize a walkout at your school, post on myspace and your blogs, play the psa's, join a phonebanking team.

We also need to start preparing for THE DAY itself. Many people have come forward to add their voice to the rally (see updated list below). We have all the proper permits from the city. Some of us are already working coordinating and working with the speakers and perfomers; security; insurance; equipment rentals; MC'ing, donations, and more.

If you can let us use your sound equipment, generator, or stage for Oct 5, please contact us immidiately!

There are many crucial tasks that still need to be done to make Oct 5 a success. We need volunteers to take up tasks for the rally and march. Please look over the list below, recruit your friends and associates to help out, and let us know what you can do.

*When eating out, shopping, going to the library, etc. always look for a community bulletin board Ask business owners, librarians, etc. to take a stack of flyers to set out.

We have an initial proposal for what October 5 might look like in Cleveland, and a timeline for making this happen. Some of the key elements are:

*A call to performance artists and musicians who would like 2 be a part of 10.05.

*We can echo the camp democracy movement cindy sheehan is spearheading. an encampment will move from texas 2 dc in september. We can set up such a "camp" on public square as a way 2 generate interest, this will be a good test run as well for the 10.05 encampment.

*Contacting locally-owned businesses, and local activist group, setting up appointments with the owners, make a presentation re: 10.05 and why they should close up shop on this day and honor a general strike.

Bus Tour in Ohio: Stolen Elections, Biker Gangs and Mega Churches

World Can't Wait reports on it's tour stop in Ohio and calls for dozens of bus tours to be launched across the country this summer as part of mobilizing for October 5th.

I pay for my coffee and glance down at a bright orange sticker that reads: NOV 3- Never Forget, in large black letters. The bus tour has arrived in Ohio.

All eyes were on Ohio the night of the 2004 elections. A nation held its breath as votes were tallied and people shook their heads in disbelief when George W. Bush claimed victory after watching crowds of people locked out of voting stations on television. After talking with folks in a café in Columbus, one would think it was still Nov. 3rd, 2004. There is a homegrown movement of activists in Ohio determined to put the evidence of 2004 voter fraud in the national spotlight and challenge the legitimacy of Bush's presidency.

I greet people at the café and show them the World Can't Wait Call and a print out of the second Not in our Name Statement of Conscience that reads; "No election, whether fair or fraudulent, can legitimize criminal wars on foreign countries, torture, the wholesale violation of human rights, and the end of science and reason". The opening sentence of the Statement and the Call sparks interest and debate about the Bush Administration and about what kind of resistance movement is commensurate with the situation the world is facing.

The conversation about the elections and Bush spills over into the car ride home with Mary, a World Can't Wait organizer from Cleveland. She turns to me and quietly tells me that she has relatives in Columbus, but is choosing to avoid them because of their blind support for George Bush. She said that she has exhausted all of her efforts to change her families' views on the war and has lost contact with some family members over political disagreements. I stare out of the window and think about how there must be thousands of similar stories out there; families divided over the war, homeland security and future of the country and the world.

Self Contained World & Bible Based Law
A crowd of people have gathered in the park to create signs and to deck out their cars with banners and posters for a car caravan to protest Rod Parsely's World Harvest mega-church, just outside of Columbus. Parsley's World Harvest Church is home to over 12,000 worshippers and employs a 400 person staff. Parsley is infamous for his fiery and militaristic sermons, where he claims that "gay sex is a veritable breeding ground for disease" and has made a distinction between Christianity and Islam by stating "I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam".

Dubbed a "new general" in the rising movement to create a Christian Nation, Parsley has forged strong alliances with influential politicians like Ohio Secretary and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell and was consulted by George W. Bush shortly after the announcement of John Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court.

The protest took us outside of city limits into a small town in Ohio surrounded by cornfields and shopping plazas. Our caravan brought World Can't Wait's message to thousands of World Church congregants and held signs that exposed the lies of the Bush Regime and challenged the repressive and hateful nature of Parsley's theocratic agenda.

The Rust Belt and the Bible Belt
The car caravan was an appropriate way to kick off the Ohio leg of the tour and an organizer remarked that this was the first time Parsley's church was protested as we ate lunch and prepared to do outreach. During lunch it was heartening to talk to an activist and college student who recently moved to Cleveland from a small town in Ohio that was virtually governed by Christian Fundamentalist laws and values. He talked of being forced to go to bible study while attending public school and described how the town's main church has a special section in the church pews for divorced women, in order to keep them separated from the rest of the congregation.
Ohio is a state of abandoned factories and churches. Through the process of taking out the Call and mobilizing for October 5th, we talked to many people who were trying to survive in a world where the factory jobs they have always depended on have been replaced with demeaning, low-wage positions at Wal-Mart. We talked to people like a father who moved from Dayton, a city that used to be the world's largest manufacturer of cash registers, to Columbus to work for a computer software agency. There was the couple who moved into a neighborhood that made national news after a "Flag War" pitted Gay couples against the residents of a traditionally Black neighborhood. (The conflict surrounding middle class, Gay couples moving into low income Black neighborhoods were dubbed "The Flag Wars" due to Gay people hanging up rainbow pride flags in their windows.)

We talked to all types of families and people who were outraged about how Bush was handling the economy and the war. Most people hated the fact that we went into Iraq to begin with and really questioned the legitimacy of Bush. The Bus Tour organizers focused our conversations with people on pulling these outrages together to present a coherent picture of the fascistic package the Bush Administration is ramming through society and the dire need to act on October 5th.
People's hope in the 2006 elections ran through their conversations, were made into bumper stickers and were trumpeted in op-ed pieces. Rarely has anyone seen so much at stake in the outcome of this political process. Now, more than ever, people need to hear this part of the message of the World Can't Wait: Even if the Democrats win, we will still lose! Even if we could guarantee that the people will be able to participate in a fair election; what will they be voting for? What kind of political climate will they be forced to compromise to with their vote? Torture, or Torture-lite? This sentiment was strong among activists in Columbus, but also mixed with the widespread disaffection people felt toward politics.

All of this pointed to the importance of mobilizing for October 5th and for the protests that were organized in Ohio for the bus tour. There is a way and a day to give expression to people's outrage and impact the course of history. We held actions against Ohio Secretary of State and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell, staged a spy-in to protest the police state atmosphere developing in Ohio and around the country, and protested an anti-immigrant motorcycle club called The Paul Revere Riders.

Hit the Road- Spread the Word
As this leg of the Bus Tour concludes, we are preparing for another phase of the Bus Tour to hit the road in Pennsylvania to confront anti-abortion Democrat candidate for Senate Bob Casey and gather momentum in mobilizing for October 5th. The world is crying out for people to resist Bush's horrific agenda and for dozens of new Bus Tours to hit the road. Organizers on the West Coast have joined this movement of Bus Tours and car caravans to protest theocratic measures being taken in Bakersfield, California. Plans are brewing in other areas around the country and need to be taken up very broadly. Large or small, the tours need to be launched with a Cindy Sheehan spirit of confronting the ugly manifestations of the Bush Regime at their front doors, and they must aim to galvanize millions to step into this historic mission of thoroughly rejecting the Bush Program and bringing it to a halt on October 5th.
